Exploring Pattern Cutting.

In the first week of my university, I explored with basic pattern cutting techniques. This workshop was really helpful as I was able to learn step by step process and terminology related to pattern cutting. We worked in groups of five so we assigned each member with particular tasks so as to achieve an effective outcome.

We started off by covering pattern paper around the mannequin and then cello taped it to the body.

We started taping the paper from the waist and gradually worked our way upwards to the bust, shoulder and neck area.

While taping the paper we made sure that we had a smooth surface and no gaps. After this, we worked on the design of our 'dress'. With a marker pen we created lines which showed where our seams would be. We also had to decide the number of pattern pieces we wanted; whether to have a simple pattern or complicated with various seams.

After completing our design we drew balance marks.Balance marks are drawn to determine whether the pattern is for front or back. A single line signifies the front whereas a double parallel line signifies the back.

After making sure we labelled each pattern we separated our paper pattern from the mannequin by cutting it at the centre back.

Then we started cutting the pieces and traced it onto a fresh pattern paper.

We also had an individual exercise where each of us independently pinned the paper pattern on the mannequin (not in order) experimenting with different forms and structure.
